The Eiffel Tower

History:

The Eiffel Tower is located in Paris, France. Its construction began in January 28,1887 and was completed in March 15 of 1889. It was named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel whose company designed and built the tower. It was going to be presented at the World’s Fair in 1889 to celebrate the centennial of the French Revolution and demonstrate France’s industrial prowess to the world. Not all Parisians were excited to have a “ridiculous tower” in the middle of the city. The protests were ignored and the construction was completed.

Importance:

The Eiffel Tower was built to honor the French Revolution. However, people started to see it as a symbol of love and entertainment.

  • Gustave Eiffel created the internal frame for the Statue of Liberty.
  • The construction of the Eiffel Tower cost 7,799,401.31 French gold francs in 1889.
  • The tower weights 10,000 tons.
  • There are 5 billion lights in the Eiffel Tower.
  • The French gave it the name of La Dame de Fer “The Irion Lady”.
